Police are investigating the theft of a Bittern steam locomotive engine between 13-14th October. The replica “sit on” locomotive, approximately 3-4ft in length, was stolen from a vehicle parked in Aysgarth Close, Newton Aycliffe.
It is described as follows: Bittern replica “sit on” steam locomotive engine, number 4464. Engraved plate on front of both sides with Bittern Replica on the locomotive body and 4464 on each of the locomotive doors.
Boiler number ME463/03 is stamped on the bottom of the back head. It is also “CE” stamped. Wheel configuration 4-6-2.
Lubricator on the right hand side. Front lamps on both sides but one of these came off when being removed from the car and was left in situ.
Regulator handle, steam controls extended on universal joints. Tender has decal transfers on both sides in gold that read NE.
The engine is made of metal and would have required two people to carry it. It is worth several thousand pounds but may have been stolen for scrap.
