A Durham leisure centre has reopened following an ambitious refurbishment programme.

Durham County Council has reopened Abbey Leisure Centre today, Monday 24 July, after being temporarily closed to allow for refurbishment works.

The leisure centre features revamped gym and fitness studios with over 80 pieces of the latest Technogym equipment, which include new screens to help guide people’s fitness and form.

The studios will have a purpose-built group cycling experience where members can take part in a personally tracked session, a virtual class, or a FreeBeats instructor-led class. There will also be a multi-use studio which will host a range of other fitness classes.

A new community Move Hub has also been created inside the centre, the first of its kind to be included in the council’s sites, with power-assisted equipment for residents who need help to become active or are recovering from health conditions.

The centre reopened for existing members today (Monday 24 July), and new members from Monday 7 August.

Cllr James Rowlandson, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for resources, investment, and assets, said: “The refurbished Abbey Leisure Centre is part of our plans to transform and modernise our leisure offer in County Durham to support the health and wellbeing of our residents. We are excited to reopen this new and improved venue which features a range of state-of-the art facilities and services to suit all ages and abilities.

“Exercising brings huge physical, mental, and social benefits to a person’s wellbeing. As such, we’ve ensured that the refurbished centre includes new accessible technology, such as the Move Hub, to help more people become and stay active, supporting our residents to live long and independent lives.”

Abbey Adventure play will open from Thursday 27 July, offering a space where younger members can bounce and slide their way through three zones of soft play, trampolines, and TAG active challenge.

The centre will also have a café, opening from Monday 7 August, which will serve refreshments, healthy snacks and tasty treats.

Its reception and changing facilities have also been refurbished as part of the works.
