Five lucky County Durham residents are celebrating after picking up vouchers worth £50 for B&Q, after winning a free draw as part of a recycling campaign launched during Altogether Greener Week earlier this year.
County Durham residents had been asked to take their broken small Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) to Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) for recycling, or donate unwanted working items to nominated local reuse charities.
The focus has been on smaller items, such as toasters, hair driers, garden power tools, remote controls, laptops, kettles and mobile phones.
Over 200 entries were received throughout the competition, which ran from Tuesday 29 May to Friday 6 July.
The council’s strategic waste team and the Environment Agency held a presentation at County Hall where the winners each received a £50 B&Q gift card prize.
Jamie Fletcher, area environment manager at the Environment Agency, which sponsored the prizes, said: “We are delighted that so many people entered the competition, and we hope that the success of this initiative has helped to get the message across about the correct disposal of WEEE.”
The five winners were: Liz Beveridge (Durham), Olga Sinclair (Newton Aycliffe), Alan Gibson (Ferryhill), Julie Peart (Newton Aycliffe) and Tara Pollard (Dalton-le-Dale, Seaham)
The winners reused or recycled a tumble dryer, washer/dryer, a kettle, toaster and digital recorder between them.
