The Queens Award for Voluntary Service – the equivalent of an MBE was presented by County Durham’s Lord Lieutenant Mrs Sue Snowdon to Forces charity Veterans at Ease. Phil Wilson MP said: “It has been a delight to watch this Newton Aycliffe charity go from strength to strength. I first came across them a few years ago when they were looking for new premises. I was pleased to be able to advise them with this, and was delighted when they successfully secured a place on the Business Park to deliver their vital services. The support they provide to ex members of the armed forces is much needed. As Chair of the Defence Select Committee in Parliament, I understand the importance of a strong ministry of defence and valuing all those involved. I wish Veterans at Ease every success in the future.” Veterans at Ease has a close relationship with the people of Newton Aycliffe for almost the entire life of the charity. After using the spare room of his house Garreth, then ran the fledgling charity from a small office in Newton Aycliffe kindly donated by a local business woman. Five years later VAE have helped over 140 men and women, some from Newton Aycliffe, and opened up a third office here earlier this year
