AN elderly man was attacked and left lying on the floor in the rain after burglars raided his home. The 71-year-old was returning to his home on Bowman Street, Darlington, at around 10.30pm on Wednesday, 28th June when he noticed a man and woman inside the house. As he approached his front door and started to go inside, the male suspect hit him, causing him to fall over the mobility scooter he was riding and hit the floor. The two suspects then ran off with a quantity of cash, leaving the elderly man lying on the floor in the rain and unable to get up. He was seen by a member of the public a few minutes later, who then called the police. Detective Constable Richard Garrett, from Darlington CID said: “This was a cowardly attack on a vulnerable elderly man. “We’d strongly encourage anyone who knows anything about the incident, or saw anything suspicious in the Bowman Road and Thompson Street West area of Darlington to get in touch.” The victim was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition. Motorist dies following crash
Police are appealing for witnesses following the collision on the A68 Bildershaw Bank near West Auckland. The two-vehicle incident happened Thursday 29th June at about 10.45am. It is understood that the driver of a black coloured Peugeot 206 was heading from Burtree in the direction of West Auckland descending the hill when he was involved in a collision with a beige Skoda Octavia heading up the hill. Paramedics and the fire and rescue service attended but the driver of the Peugeot was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Identification of the deceased is expected to take place later today. Durham Constabulary would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or the vehicles being driven prior to the crash.
