Young people from the Sunnydale Campus of Greenfield Community College thrilled staff and parents with powerful recitals of poetry on the evening of Thursday 26th January. Covering a wide range of themes, including love, war and belief, the students worked tirelessly to commit to memory each of their poems. The evening was part of a national initiative encouraging young people across the country to discover the joy of learning and reciting poems. The students worked very hard to prepare for the evening and could be seen practicing at every opportunity, memorising and reciting during lunchtimes, breaktime and even after school!
Over 30 students from every year group performed poems they had themselves selected in front of an audience including parents and staff and the Mayor of Shildon, Trish Pemberton. All talents were showcased including poetry and the musical numbers performed by Rebecca Fish, Leigh Stabler, Abigail Charlton and Emily Moore with Robert Beaston bringing the evening to a close. The event was a huge success, and Greenfield Staff were delighted with the engagement of all students who were inspired to take part. The national competition will take place in March, and we are busy preparing our students for the next stage. Mr Dover, teacher of English commented ‘Developing skills in poetry analysis is a key part of the new English curriculum and this initiative has certainly contributed to students love for poetry. We can’t wait to do it again next year.’
