Terry and Patricia Spellman of Sheraton Close celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with a family meal at the Blacksmiths Arms on Saturday 24th September. Town Mayor Jed Hillary called with a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the Town Council and heard that the couple first met at ballroom dancing classes held in Durham. Terry was an apprentice plumber who lived in Spennymoor and Patricia from Sacriston collected money on her bike from account clients of the Co-op. The couple courted for 5 years before getting married at St. Bede’s RC Church at Sacriston, moving to Spennymoor to live. The harsh winter of 1962 brought a change of job for Terry and he worked for Black & Decker for 20 years making power tools until made redundant and taking employment with Cummins in Darlington where he worked for 25 years until retiring. The couple moved to Newton Aycliffe in 1970 to be near Terry’s parents and never regretted this move to our lovely town with lots of open green spaces, trees and flowers. Terry was a social member at the Big Club, British Legion enjoys knitting reading, walking and bringing up her three children. Daughter Ann Marie is a Staff Nurse at Darlington Hospital and she has two daughters Katie & Emily. John and his wife Pam live in Liverpool and Paul is currently studying in Rome to be a Priest.
