Students at Greenfield Community College were given the opportunity to participate in creative workshops as part of the lead up to Armistice. ‘Pages by the Sea’ was headed by renowned filmmaker Danny Boyle to commemorate the many people who left the shores in World War 1, some never to return.
As part of the initiative 14-18 NOW, through the work of Sunderland Culture, Greenfield Community College were offered the opportunity to explore the story of the face being drawn in the sand on local beaches and work with artists and writers to explore the themes of the First World War through poetry and art.
Year 9 students were able to appreciate the historical and social implications of war through this creative learning and by taking the opportunity to be involved in such a significant wider initiative. Students created prose and giant poppies to contribute to the project and throughout the school, students worked on a range of activities to mark the centenary.
Greenfield Community College would like to thank 14-18 NOW and Sunderland Culture for making the workshops possible and contributing to the student learning experience through such a memorable project.
