Opera Nova is an amateur group based on Teesside. We sing all types of music – but we especially enjoy singing and acting opera. We aim to give local singers the opportunity to sing and act opera / musical theatre and local audiences the opportunity to enjoy a live performance near to home and at a low price.
New for 2024 is our Opera Nova Outreach Project – aiming to give everyone in our community, especially children and young people, the chance to enjoy opera and musical
theatre. Thanks to generous support from Great Aycliffe Town Council, we are launching our Outreach project in the community of Great Aycliffe this June.
Friday 14th June will be Opera Day at Woodham Burn Community Primary School. Opera Nova singers will be in school all day teaching Year 5 children to sing and act scenes from The Merry Widow – a comical operetta. Helping everyone to learn will be a group of music students from Woodham Academy – talented singers who have starred in many Academy productions and concerts. The day will end with a short performance for the whole school by Y5 children, Woodham Academy students and Opera Nova singers.
On Saturday 29 June at 7.30, there will be a performance of The Merry Widow in the Hall at Woodham Academy, with children from Woodham Burn Community Primary School and Woodham Academy performing as part of the Opera Nova company.
Sue Clements, Secretary of Opera Nova, says: “We are absolutely delighted to be launching our new Outreach project in Aycliffe and are very grateful to Great Aycliffe Town Council for making it all possible.”
