An Aycliffe duo, from Oak Leaf Golf club were among 34 pairs of golfers from clubs in and around Co. Durham competing for the Golf Union Championship.
Congratulations to Carl Robinson and John Petrie, Captain and Vice Captain, on winning this year’s Captains’ event on a bright and breezy day at Consett Golf Club.
The Aycliffe club is probably the smallest in the County yet the pair were triumphant, showing how good our course is to hone your golfing skills.
The Oakleaf is also one of the cheapest to join and play in the County and new members are always welcome. Call in the Golf Shop for details. Remember too Newton Aycliffe is one of only a few courses in the County that has a Driving Range.
Carl told Newton News: “It was a great surprise and honour for Oakleaf Golf club to win this trophy as we are a much smaller club than most of the other affiliates in the county and we were warmly congratulated by the other Captains & Vice Captains on the day which was very pleasing with a special thanks to the Consett pair who were our playing partners on the day.”
Part of the prize for winning the trophy is that Aycliffe have the honour of hosting the event next year – the council members on the Oakleaf golf committee are very enthusiastic in support of this event, subject to full council approval – this would involve golf club representatives from all other clubs in Durham County Golf Union coming to Oakleaf Golf Course.
The date requested is Sunday 5th May 2019 and the club are keen to start preparations once the go ahead is given. This will be an ideal opportunity for the Oakleaf Golf Club & Great Aycliffe Town Council to showcase the assets that are on offer at Oakleaf Golf & Leisure Complex and to demonstrate the warm welcome that can be offered to clubs from all over the county when they come to Newton Aycliffe.
