A good sized crowd turned out to see how the building of the Class G5 Steam Locomotive was progressing at the Rail Restorations in Shildon. The G5 Locomotive Project, which started in 2007, is recreating a classic steam locomotive; these historic tank engines were last seen in 1958 and none were preserved.
This new engine is being built from scratch in sections, completed so far: the boiler (the largest new boiler constructed in the UK for a railway locomotive for 50 years); the chassis; the bogie; casting of 4 driving wheels and the fabrication of the cab and bunker pieces ready for assembly. Once complete, she will be run on heritage steam railways such as Weardale, Wensleydale and Aln Valley.
This train originated as the brainchild of a group of North Eastern railway enthusiasts, but we warmly welcome anyone to become part of recreating the G5: by becoming a Friend from only £10; sponsoring a component or becoming a shareholder.
Come and be part of building a legacy for future generations, see us at our next open day Saturday 4th May, 10am till 2pm at Rail Restorations North East Ltd, Unit 8A, Hackworth Industrial Park, Shildon.
