A one-man play focusing on the life of legendary performer Norman Wisdom is coming to the Gala Theatre next month. Wisdom of a Fool celebrates the rags to riches story of much-loved actor and singer Norman Wisdom, from his tough childhood which saw him sleeping rough in London, his days in the army and his rise to fame with his iconic Gump character, Norman Pitkin. The BAFTA winner, who died in October 2010, won the hearts of millions for his unique style, with his fans including Charlie Chaplin who described him as ‘his favourite clown’. The drama, which has toured the country to critical acclaim, is written by Jack Lane, who also plays all 30 characters in the rollercoaster show.
“I grew up watching Norman Wisdom’s films – I loved his humour and as I grew older I began learning about his life and what he’d been through,” he said. “I wrote to him aged 13 and he replied and I guess that stuck with me, that he’d taken time to do that. When he passed away in 2010 I made a promise to myself that I’d attempt to write a play on his incredible life and career. “It’s a classic underdog story which the British have a real love affair with.” Wisdom’s family are also fans of the show, with his children Nicholas and Jacqueline Wisdom loaning Lane the Gump costume worn by their father, something he described as a real honour. “Both Nick and Jacqui have been unbelievably supportive, they answered every question I had,” he said. “I held a read through of the script with them which was nerve-wracking to say the least! To my astonishment they loved it and didn’t ask for a single word to be changed. Having their approval is hugely important and was always a priority.” The show takes place on Wednesday, 6th September at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £17 and can be purchased by visiting www.galadurham.co.uk or calling 03000 266 600
