This week we sadly said goodbye to the “Bishops Close Street” exhibition at Greenfield Arts – it has been a great success, and we have enjoyed hearing stories from all the visitors about life in Spennymoor and the surrounding area in the 1950s and 1960s.
The response to the exhibition has been fantastic – with more than 1500 visitors over the 2 months it has been open to the public.
We would like to thank the Cornish family for organising the exhibition, and Northumbria University Gallery and Bishop Auckland Town Hall for their support, and we are now looking forward to our next exhibition opening Thursday 11th September in the gallery- “Community Art Project.”
Don’t forget that a memorial lecture to celebrate the life and work of Norman Cornish will be held at Spennymoor Town Hall on Sunday 14th September.
Cornish’s biographers Bob McManners and Gillian Wales will speak about his life in Spennymoor and the development of his work as an artist, during and after his career as a miner.
The lecture will take place at Spennymoor Town Hall on Sunday 14th September 2014 at 4pm, and repeated on the same date at 7pm.
Tickets for the lecture are free and will be available from Spennymoor Town Council Offices, as well limited numbers available at Northumbria University Gallery, Newcastle. Please contact Spennymoor Town Council on 01388 815276 or email enquiries@spennymoortowncouncil.gov.uk to reserve a ticket. Please note that admission to the lectures is by ticket only as numbers are restricted.
The Mining Museum and The Bob Abley Gallery at the town hall will be open just before and after the lecture for visitors, and Spennymoor Town Council’s collection of Norman Cornish work will be available to view as well. Spennymoor Town Hall is fully accessible with ample parking at the rear.
Information about the lecture can be found on www.normancornish.com/lecture
