On Friday 27th September, 10 Year 8 students from Woodham Academy travelled to Kingston Park, home of the Newcastle Falcons, to compete in a Flag Football Tournament run by NFL team, the Minnesota Vikings.
Woodham has a history of teaching American Football to students and, as a result, were keen to be involved. The students who took part attended a number of lunchtime sessions and after school training sessions prior to the tournament. Their training helped deliver some mazey runs by the running backs and lightening quick reactions from the defensive linebackers. Woodham went unbeaten in 4 games, making it to the final and a chance to win the main prize of a trip to London to see an NFL game.
Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, Woodham came up against a very good side in the final, who had been playing Flag Football for much longer. Despite this, Woodham only lost by one touchdown and never gave up until the final whistle. Demonstrating the character and resilience of model Woodham Academy students.
All students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and have asked for an American Football club to be added to the range of sports already covered in the Sports Academy timetable. A great experience and, who knows, could this be the return of the Woodham Warriors?
