Paws2Rescue are a charity who rescue and re-home dogs from Romania, but during the founder’s many visits she could not ignore the plight of the children she saw.
Over Christmas there were children walking around in the snow with no shoes or wearing just flip-flops. With that in mind she decided to help them, and started collecting shoes and boots, plus socks and hopefully a treat of Easter eggs, to give to as many needy children as possible this Easter.
Sarah-Jane Jackman a local volunteer for the charity, put an appeal on Facebook and in the Newton News to try and get a few things collected and had an overwhelming response.
Sarah-Jane, a Graphic Designer at Newton Press, received countless boxes and bags of shoes, socks, eggs and sweets, resulting in a whole pallet full being sent to the charity’s storage unit in Sutton on 9th March.
The donations will be leaving the UK on Friday 16th March and will head by road to Romania, arriving just before Easter for distribution.
Alison Standbridge, founder of the charity, would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that donated towards this massively successful appeal and says she will be in Romania over Easter to hand out the donations and get pictures of some very happy children!
Sarah-Jane said: “A special thanks to Madison and Cayden for packing endless boxes and storing everything in her garage for weeks, Dawn Hughes for her hard work and appeals on Facebook, Aycliffe Village Primary School and South Durham Gymnastics Elite Squad, Beverley Dowson and friends at One-Point, Sheena at Children’s Blessings, Charles Clinkard Shoes of Darlington for boxes, shoes, socks and balloons, Tesco of Newton Aycliffe for donating 18 Easter eggs, Newton News for promoting the appeal and Newton Press for arranging for the mountain of donations to travel to Sutton in Surrey for the first part of their journey to Romania.” “Without help like this the appeal couldn’t have been the success it is and believe us, the difference this will make to so many children is huge!”
