A new and imaginative approach to coach development is being introduced throughout the region on 21st February at Sunnydale Leisure Centre in Shildon. It marks a significant milestone in the progression of the game in the North East. Initially the focus of Rugby League in the North East was on participation. It was felt elite players would always come out the “heartland” of the game.
The game now recognises that players from what were regarded as “development regions” can, with the right support, reach the very top. However much of this depends on the quality of coaching provided by community clubs such as the Tigers and this is the new approach.
John Simpson, chair of the Tigers said “We want our coaches to match the best in the country. This new approach ensures this will happen. It means in the near future England squads may be coached from our area.”
John went on to comment “This is a win, win situation. All our players, irrespective of ability, will benefit from the skills which our coaches will develop. It will give players the confidence to take those vital steps required to go on to a professional career. The North East has been successful in turning out quality players in many sports and it is now the time for this to happen in Rugby League. With the player development plans in place, and the support from Newcastle Thunder, the sky is the limit for our lads.”
Michael Heap who is co-ordinating the programme throughout the North East backs up John and suggested “the game has perhaps belatedly recognised the North East provides a vast pool of untapped talent. We now have the structures in place to make use of this talent.”
The Tigers are gearing up for the new season and on the lookout for new players of all ages and abilities. John said “whilst the new initiative is on elite player development the core activity of community clubs like the Tigers is to get kids playing sport. We want to extend a warm welcome to everyone who wants to get involved in this great game.”
People who are interested in knowing more about what the Tigers have to offer should contact the Club secretary on 01833 641143 or simply turn up at training which is takes place at Sunnydale Leisure Centre in Shildon on Saturday morning staring at 10 am.
