Stephen Lumley has recently retired as organist, at St. Michael’s Church, Heighington and our heartfelt thanks extend to him for his many years of service. Clergy and congregation equally, were not optimistic about finding someone to step into Stephen’s very large shoes, and to be brutally honest with you, an accomplished organist is a bit like hens teeth. However, call it divine intervention or call it what you will, a business meeting with Lissa, our vicar, and a trainee clergyman, led to a conversation and lo and behold, we have a new organist. And it gets better, he is young and enthusiastic.
Meet Daniel Coates. Born into a Christian family who are regular church goers, Daniel took an early interest, only 10 years old, in learning how to play the piano. That was easy peasy, so he moved on to the organ and, after a few lessons, was very soon playing for St. Luke’s Church in Chester, his hometown. In 2003 Daniel came to Durham University to study Physics and, after graduating, he spent the next 15 years working in schools, both as support staff and teaching. The important point for Heighington is that Daniel has settled in the local area, and is very happy to remain in Co. Durham, at least for the time-being.
Daniel is keen to build on the existing choir at St. Michael’s by recruiting new members and he has plans to expand their repertoire as time allows. Rehearsals are Tuesday evenings 7.15pm for a chat and a cuppa then practice at 7.30pm for an hour and all are welcome. No experience necessary. He would also like to start a youth choir and would welcome approaches from parents and other children’s organisations with any offers of assistance on the way forward. Daniel has already contacted our local school and will continue to work with them.
