Our Fire Station was opened in 1961 and was crewed using a day-manning system and as a result houses for the crew were built alongside the station on Central Avenue. During the 80’s the houses were put up for sale as a new shift scheme came into operation whereby living accommodation adjacent was not required.
Recently another scheme has been put into operation which now requires the Fireman to be accomodated nearby. Readers will have noticed the building taking place next to the Fire Station.
Some thought it was the new Police Station being built, but this modular building will be erected on the site of the old Police Station which is waiting to be demolished. We are told that Bats are nesting in the building and as protected species have to be safely removed before demolition can take place.
