The TES Further Education Awards 2020 shortlist has been announced and New College Durham is thrilled to be in the running for two categories: Support for Learners and WorldSkills Unsung Hero. The prestigious awards celebrate the achievements of the further education sector and recognise outstanding individuals and institutions in FE.
Colin Galley, Lecturer at New College Durham, was nominated for WorldSkills Unsung Hero for his commitment to co-ordinating WorldSkills competitions and skills events for SEND students at the College. Colin has also helped to establish a regional network of ten colleges and sixth forms and has created a calendar of events that will take place across the North East. New College Durham is now leading on three WorldSkills UK Inclusive Skills competitions: ICT Skills, Restaurant Services and Hairdressing.
Colin said: “I have been involved with the WorldSkills competitions for several years. Embedding competitions into the curriculum hugely benefits SEND students as it supports their individual growth, resilience and transition into further study or employment. The competitions are an excellent way of showcasing the students’ skills.”
The TES Support for Learners category recognised the impact of the New College’s innovative 42 Day Project, a risk-based, student-centred programme which aims to reduce the number of students that drop out of college within the first 42 days. The project involves tutors mapping each student against fourteen indicators to identify the level of support they need then working with the students to put in place a comprehensive, individual package of support. The success of the scheme was demonstrated by a drastic reduction in the dropout rate which decreased from 10% in 2016 to 4.5% in 2019.

Our entries are about providing our students with a first class experience and the best opportunities to succeed. These nominations reflect the dedication and hard work of our staff who strive to provide the best possible educational outcome for every student.
The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London, on 20 March.
