Dear Sir,
Thanks to all at Newton Press for helping me to spread the word to all the older people in our Community who sit at home all day lonely and fed up.
Let me please share a success story with you and hope that more will take up my invitation. Every Monday from 2pm until 4pm in the BURNHILL METHODIST CHURCH HALL & BURNHILL COMMUNITY CENTRE Sid Chaplin Drive next to the Turbinia Pub.
This is where a new weekly club “GOLDEN YEARS TOGETHER” meets. Last week 15 people came for a chat played dominoes and New Age Kurling whilst they were having a cup of tea or chatting.
Signing the attendance book two of the ladies noticed they both lived in the same cul-de-sac five doors apart. They had never met or spoken to each other although they had both lived there many years and travelled in separate taxis to the club.
The joy and pleasure they shared at their meeting and the fact that they could meet chat and possibly go on our trips or outings together meant they would not have to spend many lonely days seeing no one and knowing no one.
This makes my efforts and time very worthwhile; the other group I organise has charity status and has been running for 9 years and every year small groups go on holiday for 7 days together.
Many of them say that their “Club” attendance outings and holidays are the best thing that happened to them. At Christmas I receive cards from members thanking me for organising activities and in most of the cards the words always appear “Thank you for starting the club it has changed my life and I have made many friends and also made a small group of very special friends”.
I do hope people joining the ‘Golden Years Together’ Club gain the same satisfaction and meet many new friends and their loneliness becomes a thing of their past.
