Textile artist Rosi Thornton will be joining us in the Greenfield Gallery throughout June with her exhibition ‘Layers of Memory and Meaning’, open from Thursday 2nd June with a preview event on Wednesday 1st June 6pm – 8pm. Rosi is interested in used and distressed things which show layers of wear and tear, a way to carry layers of memories and meaning from a life already lived. Many cultures honour these same ideas of reusing and recycling. As we turn away from years of excess and become more thoughtful and careful with what we already have, whether through financial necessity or by remembering and renewing our own hand skills, these layers can speak to us.
As part of her time in the gallery she will be offering a two-week batik workshop for families and individuals on Monday 13th and 20th June 6:30pm – 8:30pm, at £15 per individual or £20 for families. This is a great opportunity to create your own designs on fabric using a hot wax technique, with stamping and traditional tjanting tools. You will then have the chance to colour the fabrics using dyes. Workshop 2 will look at embellishment techniques using hand and machine embroidery, buttons, beads, lace and fabric scraps. Don’t miss your chance to create your own memories and meaning with Rosi.
