Members of popular residents’ group ACORN voted last week to approach Durham County Council with a request to name a thoroughfare after Newton Aycliffe charity Honest John’s Community Fund.
The motion was suggested by lifelong Newtonian and ACORN member Ray Gordon and received with enthusiasm by the group who were recently helped by the community fund. Ray explained that this has been done before in the instance of Sid Chaplin Drive, Fujitsu Way and Alan Gray Court so is not unprecedented.
Ray went on to explain that with Newton Aycliffe set to gain up to a thousand new homes in coming years it would be an ideal opportunity to honour local charity Honest John. ACORN Chair Ken Robson ruminated that the name sounded quite intriguing, suggesting Honest John Lane, Honest John Way or Honest John Wynd.
Honest John has helped numerous groups and individuals over the years and we urge others to support the move through the media.
ACORN meetings are a place where innovative ideas and suggestions can be explored, discussed and possibly supported. Guest speakers bring fresh ideas and information to the forum. Police and Councillors attend our meetings which are open to the whole community. ACORN welcome members of other groups to come along and work with us on mutual projects for the benefit of our great town.
ACORN meet at the Phoenix Club on the second Thursday of each month at 6pm with junior members of Little Acorns meeting at 5.30pm prior to the main meeting. ACORN also incorporates Woodham Burn Neighbourhood Watch and West Ward PACT.
Next meeting is December 14th and although not necessary it would be good to see some Christmas jumpers on show.
Anyone wishing to address the group or needing further information should contact Ken on 01325 321471
