Two Students from Woodham Academy are celebrating after passing their Graded Music Examinations. Rory Hubery and Rebecca Cox both passed the tests set by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.
Year 10 student Rory passed Grade 5 saxophone just two years after he began to learn the instrument. Rory, who is also a very talented drummer, performs in a variety of ensembles within school as well as Durham County Big Band, South Regional Wind Band and the County Little Big Band. He is currently studying GCSE Music, and hopes to pursue a career in music as a performer or teacher.
Rebecca Cox, a Year 9 student, passed her Grade 4 Piano and is now working towards her Grade 5 theory. She has been playing for four years and has worked hard to develop her piano skills.
Tina Taylor, Assistant Headteacher and Teacher of Music, said: “Congratulations to Rory and Rebecca, who have combined their talents with a lot of hard work, and thoroughly deserve their success. As a school we are committed to ensuring that music remains an important part of a child’s education. It is sad to see that this is not always the case, with schools across the country having to reduce music provision due to funding cuts and Government changes.”
The Music Department at Woodham Academy has an excellent track record of results at Key Stage 4, with many students moving onto post-16 courses in music and performing arts. The Music Department regularly delivers high quality concerts and musicals.
This is in addition to the work that goes on within the classroom as part of the weekly curriculum. Students of all abilities are encouraged to participate and instrumental tuition is available for those who wish to start to learn to play a particular instrument.
Former student Abbie Finn, also a drummer as well as a trumpeter and bass guitarist, has since gained a 1st Class Music Honours Degree at Leeds College of Music and is now studying for her Master’s Degree at Trinity Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London.
In addition, Nathan Elwick, a former Woodham student is currently performing in the West End, and recently took to the stage at the Olivier Awards.
