Newton Aycliffe FC won one & lost one in their Northern League games this week. Both games were played at Moore Lane with Consett taking the points on Saturday. Two goals did the damage for the Steelmen & only a James Winter penalty save prevented a bigger scoreline. Tuesday brought a visit from West Auckland. Once again the result was 2-0 but this time it was the home side that took the honours. Both sides were reduced to 10 men inside the first fifteen minutes. Once the game settled down there were chances at both
ends. On 27 minutes West came close with a header from a corner sailing over the crossbar. However within a minute Aycliffe had the lead. Man of the match Ashley Coffey provided a cross which John Campbell headed into the net. The second half saw more pressure from Aycliffe with a couple of chances being denied by West keeper Gareth Shaw blocking with his legs. The first was from a run from Brad Varga, playing in midfield in Paul Garthwaite’s absence. The second save was from a Campbell shot after a cross from Brian Close. West Auckland worked hard for an equaliser but suffered a killer blow with two minutes to go. A magnificent 25 yard shot from Jordan Laidler beat Shaw to settle Aycliffe’s nerves & give them the points. Aycliffe now lie 8th in the Ebac Northern League Division One table with 9pts from 5 games. They now face three consecutive away fixtures, at Chesterle-Street on Saturday 3rd September, Guisborough on Wednesday 7th & Dunston on Saturday 10th. Their next home game is on Saturday 17th September against Penrith
