Cornmill Shopping Centre recently provided ‘behind the scenes’ access to local children from Corporation Road Primary School and Northwood Primary School. Bringing the local community together in an educational setting, the children learnt what is involved in the role of a Security Officer and were taught interesting facts about the centre.

Greeting the Mini Helpers on the day was Centre Manager Susan Young who gave a welcome talk.  This was followed by a briefing on the centre’s security measures from members of the Cornmill’s security team Gary Yates and Carl Skelton. As part of the presentation, the children were each given a notebook, pencil and Cornmill bag as well as their own Cornmill Shopping Centre Hi-Vis waistcoat, courtesy of AM Services Group. Alongside the presentations by centre staff, the primary schools were introduced to a local PCSO who informed the children of the PCSO’s role within the community, including supporting police officers to help prevent crime, as well as building relationships with local residents.

Mrs Sarah Wassell, Northwood Primary School, said: “Our children were so excited about their trip to the Cornmill Centre – it was a fantastic experience for them. They were delighted to be Mini Helpers for the day and learn about the shopping centre, working closely with the staff and PCSOs.”

Susan Young, Centre Manager at the Cornmill Centre, added: “We want to make sure every visitor young or old feels safe in our centre. By educating local school children through our successful ’behind the scenes’ sessions and PCSO talks we hope that they can support our security staff by becoming our Mini Helpers and passing on messages to their families and peers.”
