Dear Sir,
It was good to see the article about the autobiography of perhaps the region’s best known local journalist in last weeks Newton News. Mike Amos has devoted his working life writing about the people and places that make this area so special, firstly in The Evening Despatch and then The Northern Echo.
Myself, writing this from the wrong side of 50, I remember the often soaking wet paper boy delivering the morning title to my parents’ home 6 days a week so that we could read our local and national news. The articles written on various subjects by Mike were important to the fabric of the paper. A publication I still don’t like to miss each day.
When I read of this book, which has been self published by Mike and contains many colour photos in its 390 glossy pages, I decided to email Mike and jump in the car to personally collect my copy. A man I had never met welcomed me and exchanged my crispy new tenner for an autographed copy of his memoir.
The book, and I am only around two thirds of the way through, is most enjoyable, packed with memories and warm words and phrases that I too grew up with. I am toying with the idea of further copies for relatives. It’s hard to believe that, in this strange year, Christmas is just a few months away. Anyone with a now elderly relative that reads would love this.
As stated in the article last week, the author can be contacted mikeamos81@aol.com
