‘Letters to a Soldier’ by Geoff Harrison.
During the renovation work being carried out in Brancepeth Castle, late in 2021, a trap door was exposed revealing an archivist’s treasure trove. Dating back to the time when the castle was the regimental headquarters of the Durham Light Infantry, such things as instruction booklets, posters, magazines, along with bottles and cups and other artifacts, were found. However, of most interest, were the twenty or so letters which had been written to soldiers based in the castle, written by mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and sweethearts, which paint a wonderful picture of the realities of domestic life in the 1940’s. The talk will be based on these letters.
Admission charge is £3, which will include refreshments, everyone will be most welcome.
