GATT are taking a short break over the festive season after a busy few weeks litter picking around the town.
Areas have included the nature reserve near Cobbler’s Hall where an orthopaedic crutch was rescued and will be cleaned and returned to the supplier.
The Nature Reserve and Great Aycliffe Way to the Rugby Club saw us remove a work sign from the pond (wellies a bit soggy afterwards), bread trays, shopping trolley, even the remainder of a trolley that was pulled out on our last visit. Recycling included bags of tins, glass bottles, a snow shovel, a saw and garden shears. The tools were reconditioned and donated to charity.
On one very wet Wednesday, along the Locomotion Way and the Complex fields, over a hundred tins and twenty plus glass bottles were recovered for recycling and a kiddies little rocking horse was cleaned up and donated to charity.
One of the biggest ‘hauls’ in recent weeks was the area behind Scott Place and to the bridge over the Burn where we pulled out an old swimming pool, chairs and discarded decorating supplies from the bushes along with the usual rubbish.
We recycle approximately 50 glass bottles and 100+ tins every week. A large number of crisp packets will also be sent to be made in to blankets for the homeless.
Thanks to GATC for collecting our bags every week.
We’ll be out and about again as a team in the new year, but you just might spot one or two of the team before then (including our mascot Tidy Ted).
Thank you to everyone who stops to talk to us, and a very Happy Christmas to the good folks in and around Newton Aycliffe, especially the other groups and the individuals (including boys and girls during their school holidays) who litter pick too.
Merry Christmas from GATT
