Dear Editor,
On the 27th of July it was “Mayor Sunday” for the Mayor and Mayoress of Darlington, Councillor Gerald Lee and his wife Ruth. Gerald as a rural Mayor wanted a Service to be held in his home village of Heighington. The Service took place at St. Michael’s church and was attended by fifteen Mayors and their consorts from all over the North East. Bishop Mark of Jarrow attended and took part in this special occasion. The church choir sang an anthem Non Nobis Domine, accompanied by Richard Powell on the trumpet. Janet Walke, mezzo, sang the 23rd Psalm and Alleluia by Mozart. The children’s choir also took part. After the Service guests and congregation enjoyed light refreshments in Heighington Village Hall.
The “Mayor Sunday” was a great day, one to remember by all in Heighington Village and we thank our Mayor and Mayoress for making it happen.
The attached picture shows the assembled dignitaries on the Village Green.
