Matthew Atkinson shown batting for Newton Aycliffe Cricket Club against Saltburn at Moore Lane last weekend. He went on to score 39 runs and captured four Saltburn wickets for 9 runs.
Matthew returned to Newton Aycliffe at the beginning of the year following four years on a Sports Scholarship at South Carolina University and two years employment in the USA. He hadn’t touched bat or ball for six years and is having an excellent season with the local team in Division. 2.
His elder brother David also plays for the town but as a Store Manager in retail (Boots) it is difficult to get Saturdays off on a regular basis. However he also is playing well scoring 59 runs in the same fixture which Aycliffe won despite interruption by rain.
