A minute’s silence is to be held in Durham Market Place this weekend to mark the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
The event, at 8pm on Sunday 18 September, is part of the national Moment of Reflection, announced by the Government earlier this week and will be led by Cllr Beaty Bainbridge, Chair of Durham County Council; James Fenwick, Deputy Lord Lieutenant for Durham, John Hewitt, Chief Executive of Durham County Council.
The event is open to the public and has been organised by the council to enable people to come together in the Market Place to mark the national Moment of Reflection.
Anyone planning on travelling through the city on Sunday is advised that Silver Street and Saddler Street (Durham Market Place) will be closed from 7.30pm to 8.30pm.
Books of condolence in council venues around the county will be open from 10am to 4pm on Monday, 19 September. Floral tributes are also being left at dedicated locations. Full details of both are available at www.durham.gov.uk/hermajestythequeen.
Residents wishing to make a donation in memory of The Queen are being advised to visit the Royal Family’s website for a list of charities supported by the Royal Family – www.royal.uk/charities-and-patronages.
