As readers may have seen in the National media, the government has agreed to spend money on refurbishing and rebuilding schools in the North East of England. Head Teacher Kieran Pavey contacted Newton News to announce that Vane Road Primary has been successful in its application to be one of these schools.
There is very little information at this stage as the Department for Education will need to survey each project over the next couple of months, decide the priorities (they said Vane Road is fairly high priority) and then formulate a plan.
The application through the Government’s Priority Schools Building Programme 2 identified issues Vane Road have with asbestos, heating, appropriate layout and insulation. The school will either have significant refurbishment or a total rebuild.
Kieran said: “I am not sure how they would address all these issues without a full rebuild”. It is great news for the children of Vane Road both present and future. The school is currently is such a state of disrepair due to many years of neglect and through the difficulties the presence of asbestos poses. It is simply not acceptable to allow this situation to continue and with this grant we will be able to provide an environment to enable pupils to grow, develop and thrive”.
Counc. Jed Hillary said: “As the Local Authority Governor for the school, I am delighted to hear the school has been scheduled for redevelopment. This heralds a new chapter for the school and there are exciting times ahead.”
