Locomotion visitors can enjoy four weeks of free, science-based activities after a bumper start to the summer programme.
More than 4,500 people have visited Locomotion in the past two weeks, and until Sunday 4 September, the museum will be open daily, with new activities weekly, based around different themes of coding, transport, environment, and shapes.
During the first two weeks the museum welcomed Bricks McGee and their LEGO activities, Same Different Arts who held their Sense-O-Matic walkabout performances, and Technology Tom who hosted science shows.
Sarah Price, Head of Locomotion, said: “We’ve got a really exciting and varied programme of summer activities at Locomotion running between now and the beginning of September. We want to inspire the next generation of engineers and hope that our STEM based activities positively influence the futures of our younger visitors.
“As a free museum offering free activities that change every week during the holidays, Locomotion is a great, cost-effective place to visit time and again, and we’re really pleased that we’ve been able to welcome so many visitors through our doors already this summer.”
The focus shifts to coding in week three with TechyTots leading activities between Tuesday 9 and Thursday 11 August.
South Durham Model Engineers will be running their miniature railway in week four as transport is the theme. Bricks McGee returns and storytelling with Tilly Too Tales also features.
The museum’s annual Classic Bus Rally in partnership with Aycliffe & District Bus Preservation Society will take place on Sunday 21 August and will include a selection of classic buses on display and ‘mystery tours’ on selected buses. Bus rides are free, but places are limited and visitors will be asked to book tickets on the day.
As part of environment week, SC.OUT.ED will be running science-based and outdoor activities. ‘Save the Planet’ walkabout performance with Same Difference Arts will look at the impact of littering and the benefit of recycling.
Same Difference Arts return between in the final week of activities with a bubble workshop as visitors get the chance to explore shapes.
Work has begun to create a new outdoor play area at the museum. Featuring brand new play equipment for young visitors to explore the new space is expected to open in mid-August.
Museum admission is free and ticket booking is no longer required. All the museum’s summer activities are free, but some do require a place to be booked upon arrival. For more information and for all dates, visit: www.locomotion.org.uk/whats-on/summer-spectacular.
