Livin is proposing to demolish all the prefabs in Clarence Green and Travellers Green, replacing them with modern mixed housing with provision for elderly and disabled tenants. They state the prefabs are at the end of their life, are poorly insulated and difficult to improve without great expense and major disruption to residents. All tenants are being consulted individually and a few are not happy to be facing upheaval at their time of life and others who have lived there for many years are loathe to leave the beautiful gardens they have created.
One tenant told Newton News the only way he would leave his house is in a coffin! The new development would be built in 3 Phases starting with the demolition of five prefabs in Travellers Green opposite Gilpin Road. The idea is to build new houses and transfer residents in the Phase 2 area into their new homes with all types of help being provided by Livin including disturbance allowance and home loss payments. It is evident Livin will do very well from this development as they can build more dwellings on this substantial piece of land particularly if they are allowed to build on the spacious greens.
Subject to planning permission the development starts in January 2018, with the whole building programme completed by 2020. The consultation with tenants ends on 7th July
