Some of you will know Lee from his work for the Town Council, others from his previous charity cycling challenges raising money for Prostate Cancer UK, Brain Tumour Research and Crohn’s & Colitis UK.
Lee said “I’m taking vital steps towards ensuring veterans can get the support they need. This year I will be taking on Cycle September and cycling 500 kilometres to raise vital funds for life-changing mental health treatment for veterans.”
Combat Stress is the UK’s leading veterans’ mental health charity, the work they do is life-changing and often lifesaving. No one else does what they do. They provide the only intensive mental health treatment service to our UK veterans. Their services are provided across the UK, in-person and online. At a time that can be isolating and daunting, they are here to help.
For over a century, they’ve helped former servicemen and women deal with issues like trauma, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Today, they provide support to veterans from every service and every conflict.
They provide clinical treatment and support for veterans from the British Armed Forces, focusing on those with complex mental health issues resulting from their experiences during military service. When some military personnel leave service, their experiences can’t easily be left behind. Without treatment, psychological trauma can eventually tear lives apart. They believe military trauma shouldn’t destroy the lives of veterans and their families.
The 2021 Census identified 22,615 veterans in County Durham, and Veterans make up 5.2% of the over 16 years of age population, which is higher than the England average of only 3.8%.
