St John’s School & Sixth Form College in Bishop Auckland have been awarded Leadership Academy Status after being recognised by Sports Leaders UK for their excellent practice. This is an elite award that is given to centres who demonstrate good practice within the delivery of the awards. As part of the leadership qualifications many of the students work within the local community to achieve their volunteering time including local primary schools, clubs and within the Sainsbury School Games.
Many of the students are also part of the County Durham Leadership Scheme and last year 8 students achieved over 50 hours volunteering. Heidi Coulthard and Steven Taylor achieved over 100 hours and 200 hour respectively.
The level 3 leadership award is delivered alongside the Schools Rugby Academy. The students then volunteer in the community and with the RFU to achieve their volunteering hours.
Leadership has continued to grow in the school and we are looking forward to working with more of the feeder primaries to offer leadership qualifications to their pupils.
