Rob Clayton trained as a baker on leaving school, on e the old YTS scheme and has always loved baking. He remained in the trade for 15 years until personal circumstances forced a change of career and he became a Probation Officer. Although his career changed he would often be found in the kitchen creating something delicious. When my children were born it wasn’t long until they too were helping out and enjoying baking too.
Then a friend asked me to make some special buns for her newly opened restaurant which inspired Rob to experiment with flavoured breads which became very popular with his friends who often requested their favourites. This inspired him to sell his products commercially and around 24 months ago, armed only with an old 1970’s Kenwood Chef and a domestic oven ‘Labour of Loaf’ was born. It wasn’t long before the demand outgrew his equipment so he built a bakery in his garden but after months of trading it became apparent that bigger premises were required and the move to Newton Aycliffe seemed an obvious choice, in line with the craft theme emerging around the Blue Bridge Centre Newton Press, Emres Barbers shop, Railtown Coffee and the Steam Machine Brewery.
Rob’s products range from traditional breads such as Sourdoughs, rye bread and spelt loaves to more specialist and creative combinations such as jalepeno and cheese, black pudding and sun dried tomato as well as other alternative products such as rhubarb and almond brioche. He trades at local farmers markets all over the north and can be found with one of his daughters who love to help their Dad. My products are also available in a few select retail outlets, restaurants and cafes. I’m happy for people to come and have a chat at the bakery and purchase some bread of their choice direct, when available. Rob said: “Again I find myself in a position whereby demand for my breads is greater that my capacity to produce it on my own.
Whilst this is testament to the quality of each hand made product I’m in a position where I’m looking to take on an experienced baker to assist, initially on a casual basis to help cover busy periods and holidays. A passion for the craft is essential, along with reliability and a driving licence as deliveries may be included in the duties. If you are interested in assisting in creating these unique products call Rob on 07855 553884. If you’re interested in ordering from me or wanting to discuss the possibility of me supplying your restaurant or shop the number to contact me on is the same”.
