The Town Council elections are on Thursday 2nd May 2013, and the town’s Labour Party candidates have launched their election manifesto.
It starts by expressing disappointment that, at the last election, some candidates made promises they could never keep and failed to fulfil. The Labour manifesto promises to pursue objectives which are ‘realistic, costed and achievable’, namely:
1. To expand the role of the Town Council as ‘the voice of the people’, continuing to campaign for a good deal for townspeople from the Hitachi development and the Business Park, the town centre management, and from service-providers such as the NHS, the Police and Arriva buses.
2.To work with Livin and other housing providers to explore ways to address the housing crisis.
3.To continue to protect the positive aspects of Great Aycliffe’s environment, particularly through the development of a Neighbourhood Plan
4.To defend as far as possible the services provided by the Town Council against devastating government cuts in revenue … whilst continuing to seek efficiency savings, and keeping the Town Council’s element of the Council Tax as low as possible
5.To seek proactively the views of increasing numbers of townspeople of all ages, listening and responding genuinely to what they say.
The Labour Town Council candidates would welcome debate and discussion of these objectives in the Newton News so that they can explain and promote their vision for the Town Council for the next four years.
