Since the early 1900’s March 8th has been celebrated as International Women’s Day recognising and celebrating the achievements of women, to campaign for equality and to inspire girls and women across the globe.
There was certainly plenty to inspire year 10 and 11 girls from Greenfield College who attended the event at County Halllast week. The day was introduced by the first female Chair of Durham County Council and the first female Lord Lieutenant.
From the Elite Make-up Artist, Durham born, who followed her dream to become a make-up artist to the stars, to the Vicar, one of the first women ordained, ignoring the men who said women couldn’t be priests – the message was ‘you can do it, if you believe in yourself and give it a go’.
The most inspirational and moving talk was from Katy Storie, International Rugby Player, capped 24 times for England and now a mentor for Sky Sports Living. She reminded us that it is what is different about us that makes us special.
In between the talks the students and staff from Greenfield were all able to take part in fun practical activities which also pushed us out of our comfort zone.
They learned to speak Chinese, had a Henna demonstration and did some Bollywood dancing. All those who attended had a great time but also returned with the message that by aiming high, accepting your differences and working hard for your future, you can achieve your dreams.
