Great Aycliffe played their first game in the Durham & District Inter Club triples league and were in great form. They were at home to last year’s winners Ferryhill and ran out 5-0 winners.
All three rinks were comfortable winners though D McDonald left it till late. After ten ends the home side were one shot down but then turned things around with a late surge scoring twelve shots on the last four ends to ease home by ten shots. On the other rinks skip P Payne was rarely tested as the visitors were restricted to five scores and in fact only managed their second score on the ninth end. They too were winners by ten shots. Skip Rob Jones was helped greatly by a seven shot haul on the ninth putting the rink in a winning position which they held onto.
Scores: R Jones 15-7 N Grimmer, P Payne 18-8 W Latimer, D McDonald 21-11 H Wilson.
The following day Aycliffe were in action again this time in the newly formed Indoor Bowls Premier League.
Durham IBC were hosts for the first week’s fixtures and Aycliffe were drawn against the likely favourites of Stanley IBC.
It turned out to be an uncomfortable afternoon for the Aycliffe rink represented by T May, B Nicholson and P Payne as Stanley turned on the style and ran out 29-9 winners. If the Stanley players keep up this sort of form then a few more teams could be on the end of a similar defeat.
Scores: Gt Aycliffe 9-29 Stanley, Ferryhill 19-19 Houghton, Durham 18-20 Darlington “A”, Gateshead 15-24 Darlington “B”
The next round will be played at Stanley on Thurs 22nd Oct.
