Huntsman returned to league action this weekend following County Cup success against local rivals The Sports Club. With manager Neil Dodds on holiday, assistant manager Ben Wood took charge of the team, making several changes and recalling Shaun Sproates, Callum Musgrave and Mike Sproates to the side.
The change paid dividends early on as Reed Molloy worked back to win the ball deep in the opposition half, before finding Mike Sproates out wide in an advanced position. It looked like Sproates may have had too much to do, but he smashed the ball low and hard from a difficult angle to make it 1-0 to the home side.
The advantage didn’t last long however as The Sports Club won a foul just outside the Huntsman penalty area. Campbell stepped up for the away side and his well-placed free kick levelled the score at 1-1. From then onwards it descended into a scrappy affair with a couple of hard challenges flying in from both sides. It looked as though it would be a stalemate heading into the half before a piece of individual brilliant from Shaun Sproates, who rolled his man and arced a left foot shot in off the far post to make it 2-1.
The Sports Club rallied after half time, and began to get the better of the early exchanges in the second half. However, Mike Sproates picked up a loose ball and squared it for brother Shaun, who lashed another left footed effort into the bottom corner for his 4th goal of the season. Shortly afterwards, it was Mike Sproates again who got free down the right-hand side and drove into the opposition penalty area, where Reed Molloy was on hand to tap in to make it 4-1.
The scoring was completed when a beautifully weighted ball from substitute Ben Sedgewick found the in-form Molloy to score his 12th goal this season. Stuart Ord was awarded man of the match marshalling a superb defensive display against a previously free scoring sports club with his central defensive partner Paul Barnes and midfield enforcer Lee Redpath also among the players to shine
The Huntsman aim to maintain their 100% record for the season in County Cup action this Sunday, with a home tie against Greatham Bull & Dog at Simpasture kick off 10.30.
