Since November 2016 Newton Aycliffe has seen Syrian Refugees settle in our town after fleeing their war torn country. Government figures show Durham is the best in the country for re-settlement and Newton Aycliffe the best in Durham which shows what an understanding and welcoming place we live in.
Last year we were approached by our local County Councillors to organise a trip to bring local residents and refugees together to build new friendships and a stronger community. So last Friday 57 people sailed on the Teesside Princess up and down the river Tees, enjoying the views and wildlife while indulging in cake and tea.
There was a great atmosphere and everyone mixed together, watching the young families dancing and singing traditional song was a joy. We hope this is another step forward in the new lives of the refugee families, some are giving back to their community by volunteering at the Food Bank and other charities also one father is seen litter picking in around his local streets, a true asset to our town.
Thank you to Newton Aycliffe County Councillors E. Adam, J. Atkinson, J. Clare, S. Durham, K. Hopper, P. Howell and S. Iveson for supporting this event through their Neighbourhood Budget a true community event.
Thank you
Philip Clark
Chair.
