As winter approaches the number of hedgehog sightings are starting to slow down but we are still concerned about the number of small autumn juveniles still out there because mum has decided to hibernate. These small ones need to be brought indoors! As I have mentioned before they won’t have the weight in their favour to carry them through these cold weeks or months, leaving them out in extreme weather conditions is a death sentence, it you think a hedgehog is in trouble please ring The British Hedgehog Preservation Society on 01584 890801. They will provide you with a rehabbers number who has the space to keep these little ones till April next year.
We are dealing with difficult situations at the moment because the weather has been very unkind to our hedgehogs, too many small hedgehogs have been washed out of their nests and are also unable to find new ones, their health has suffered and too many don’t get to rescue centres in time. Warmth, treatment and food is top on rehabbers list of priorities when we admit them if they are to thrive.
Thank you everyone who reads this article and has helped this rescue centre.
