Spennymoor U11 0 – Heighington U11 3
The Heighington lads knew what was on the line going into this match and had to fight tooth and nail to secure the points they needed to win the title this year. The lads were out of the traps and took the game to Spennymoor in the first 10 minutes but couldn’t find the breakthrough. However, Spenny showed their resilience and the tide slowly started shifting with the Heighington defence being made to work very hard and looking nervey for long periods. That was until Dom launched a long ball forward finding Lucas up front who calmly slotted home to make it 1-0. Not long after, young Jack made himself a chance and made no mistake finding the bottom corner. 2-0 at the break but by no means home and dry.
Spennymoors refusal to give up made a very rough 2nd half for Heighington indeed, often finding ourselves on the back foot and relying on last ditch tackles to keep out a determined opposition who did everything but score. Dom was extremely busy in goal-making some outstanding saves (inc a fantastic one handed penalty save) while his goal frame took a battering too on several occasions. Bruno steadied our ship with 15 mins left with a low drive from distance which nestled in the bottom corner to make it 3-0.
Not our prettiest performance by any means but the lads came through a very stern test under pressure. Spennymoor were only 2nd by scoreline today but certainly not in footballing terms, the scoreline massively flattered us in a game which, on another day, could have easily went the other way, our quality got us over the line, not our football.
MOTM: Isaac Morgan, this kid wasn’t giving an inch at RB today. Laid it all on the line and showed a determination and grit which any adult would be proud of. Easiest MOTM decision I’ve had to make this season. Simply fantastic. Well done young man.
Thanks to Neil Thomas and his awesome Spennymoor team who were fantastic hosts, we’ve nothing but respect for this lot.
Well done to my team of boys, it’s been a long old season and these kids really have had to dig deep and go to the trenches at times for their points. I am probably a little more stern on this lot than I should be but I know what they are capable of and this is their second consecutive league win after jumping two divisions. Well done lads, as you know, me and your parents are extremely proud of you guys, you are all amazing and brilliant – you deserve to be CHAMPS and deserve to feel like that. Enjoy it boys, see you at the presentation.
Thanks to our match day sponsors Chris Harper and the gang at Sash Hardware. We are very honoured to represent your fantastic company, thank you so much.
