Year 9 Health and Social Care students at Woodham Academy recently had the pleasure of taking part in masterclasses which were delivered by healthcare professionals. One of the workshops conducted by a paediatric nurse gave the students an insight into a typical daay on their ward. The students were able to make links between professional practice and their lessons on health measures, or patient observations, such as blood pressure, temperature and pulse rate.
A social worker in residential care presented a second workshop on careers in social work. The students were given a wide range of information on career pathways and progression. The workshop also encouraged them to use their problem solving skills with students being posed dilemmas to resolve. Once again the students were able to apply their understanding from lessons on confidentiality and safeguarding to the different situations.
Both Woodham Academy and the students are greatly appreciative of the professionals for using their time to support learning.
