On his twitter account on 5th June Luke Molyneux wrote: “My Sunderland journey has sadly come to an end. I’ve loved every minute of it and made some lifelong friends. I’d like to thank the first team and academy staff who have supported me along the way, especially Robbie Stockdale for giving me my first team debut against Wolves, a day I’ll never forget. This club will always be in my heart. Now looking forward to a new challenge wherever that will be and to see what the future will bring.”
Once the news got out that Luke’s contract was coming to an end and that he would be leaving Sunderland, other teams, including Hartlepool, quickly showed an interest in signing the winger. The talented 21 year old quickly emerged as one of the Manager’s (Craig Hignett) main summer targets after he produced a series of dazzling displays whilst on loan at Hartlepool United in the second half of last season.
It seemed fitting, therefore, that on 12th June Luke signed a 2 year contract with Hartlepool United.
Luke had made a great impact on the fans whilst on loan and, from the comments made on social media, they are delighted and very excited that Luke is going to be back at Hartlepool. Luke, himself, is very excited about what lies ahead and can’t wait to get back to Hartlepool, to meet up with the lads and get started on the new season and be a part of a team pushing for promotion.
Luke enjoyed his time at Hartlepool and couldn’t praise the fans enough for the atmosphere they created and the support they gave to their team.
Luke’s family are also very excited about him playing for Hartlepool. They attended all his home games whilst he was on loan there. Luke’s Grandad (Peter Molyneux) has been a season ticket holder at Sunderland AFC for over 50 years but has decided to cancel his ticket and swap it for a Hartlepool season ticket to fully support Luke. We wish Luke well for the future.
