On the weekend of July 26th/27th/28th 2024 Newton Aycliffe based kart racer Scarlet Whitaker Dunn attended Teesside Autodrome for rounds 4 & 5 of the Teesside Sprint Series.
Scarlet was racing in the highly competitive Honda Cadet 200cc class with a 30 kart grid on, what turned out to be, a swelteringly hot weekend of racing.
After setting promising 8th and 11th places in the morning warm-ups on the Saturday and Sunday, tricky qualifying sessions left Scarlet with lots of work to do in her races on both days.
Unfortunately, Scarlet’s fortune did not improve over the weekend with many of her races marred by on-track incidents and accidents causing race stoppages for safety reasons. Thankfully, no serious injuries were sustained by those involved.
In the final race of the weekend, Scarlet was making solid progress in fighting her way toward the front when she was unfortunate to come upon two stricken karts in her path part way around a blind left hand corner. Scarlet entered the corner unsighted and skillfully managed to avoid the first kart but sadly not the second causing steering damage to her kart that put her out of the race.
These things happen from time to time in motorsport, however Scarlet and the team will be ‘revved up and ready’ for the next round at the end of August.
We would like to thank Amaron Racing, PHM (Peninsula Historic Motorsport), Grandad Ron and Rob Storey for their generous assistance and financial support making this possible. To support Scarlet in her journey, please email mail@amandawhitaker.com
