On behalf of all the residents living in the Parish of Heighington I wish Mr Doug Sayles a very happy birthday. On July 15th Doug will celebrate his 100th birthday.
Born in Yorkshire Doug joined the navy in 1937 and served 24 years before the mast. He fought in many sea battles which included sailing into northern Russian ports with the Arctic Convoys and came close to dying on many occasions. After leaving the navy he joined GEC eventually moving to Newton Aycliffe where he worked for many years.
Doug is highly respected in our community – always immaculately turned out, still doing his own washing and ironing and still managing to walk to church when the weather is kind.
On the 21st July he will be the birthday guest in Heighington Village Hall where together with around 70 guests we will celebrate his birthday in true village style.
