UTC South Durham welcomed Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant to their site this week to highlight how they are tackling the engineering skills gap right here in the North East. Mrs Sue Snowdon, the Lord-Lieutenant of County Durham, was shown around the state of the art facilities by UTC students and met with local employers that are engaged with the students for real industry led projects.
UTC South Durham’s Business Engagement Manager, Catherine Purvis-Mawson said, “To be able to welcome Her Majesty’s representative here to UTC South Durham was very special for us. We are currently in the year of engineering and what better way to show off our students, our facilities and how we hope to help young people engineer their futures.”
When asked about the Lord-Lieutenant’s work with young people in the region Catherine added, “Mrs Snowdon is a great ambassador for young people in the North East and it was an honour to have her here to see what we do, why we are different to other educational settings and how we, alongside our industry partners, hope to inspire the next generation of engineers.”
Commenting on her visit, Mrs Snowdon said, “I was so impressed with the UTC and its students. The quality and diversity of the facilities and courses offered to the students are first class, as are the strong links, which the college has forged with the business community. UTC South Durham offers a hands on education where students are given opportunities to learn from industry experts and work with some of the most established and respected companies locally and globally. It is an ideal vehicle for those young people who want to pursue a career in manufacturing and engineering, helping them get ready for the world of work and will certainly make a significant contribution to tackling the skills gap. UTC is an excellent facility. “
