A local sports club is putting to good use a new floor that has been recently installed at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre. Athena Sports Academy, who are based in Newton Aycliffe Leisure centre have taken delivery of a new sprung floor.
With support from Durham County Councils Culture and Sport department, the club were successful in securing funding from local councillors John Clare, Eddy Adam, Kate Hopper, Paul Howell, Scott Durham, Jim Atkinson and Sarah Ivesons Neighbourhood Budgets
Joanne Heron, Community Sport & Physical Activity Development Co-ordinator commented,
“Athena are an active member of the County’s club support programme ‘Club Durham’. The club works hard to identify grants that support development and growth. The new floor is a fantastic addition to the clubs facility, allowing them to offer more classes and host national competitions which in turn will bring more visitors to Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre and the town as a whole.”
Brittany Carruthers, Head coach of Athena Sports Club and the project lead said,
“The new sprung floor has allowed the club to successfully host British Gymnastics national qualifier events at the leisure centre and offer regional floor competitions to other clubs across the UK, attracting hundreds of visitors to Newton Aycliffe at a time.
In addition, every single one of our 300+ members now benefits from a safer and higher quality session, which will inevitably assist them with much quicker development and progression.”
